Need Volunteers to Serve Our Kingdom Kids
Summer Sunday School is a wonderful ministry to our Kingdom Kids, but we can’t do it without your help. Please consider serving one or two Sundays in this ministry where we have a great need for volunteers. We need teachers and assistants for various classes—from 4-year-olds to 3rd grade—during both services, but particularly at 11am. The summer term runs through September 5, and we will work around your conflicts and vacation schedule. No experience teaching or working with kids needed. The only requirement is a servant’s heart. If you want to volunteer or learn more, please email Emily Rein or call her at (205)253-0338.

Summer Choir…
…is open to all singers age 12 and up this month. Arrive to the sanctuary by 8:45am each Sunday morning in July, learn the choral anthem, and sing in the services that day. No robes are required and there are no weeknight rehearsals. Come and enjoy the fellowship and joy of singing in worship to God’s glory.

Crosstrainers
Dear Career Women of MPC,

For seven years, I had the privilege of mentoring career women in the Fellows Program at the C.S Lewis Institute. During that time, I met Rebecca Cotton, a CSLI fellow, who began worshiping with us at MPC.

We started praying about beginning a similar group for career women at MPC. And so we did. We will begin our fifth year of Crosstrainers this fall. So, if you are looking for a small group with which to share a substantive time of studying and growing deeper in your relationship with Christ, Crosstrainers just might be for you.

We meet one Saturday a month as a group for a time of teaching, discussion of a book, prayer and fellowship. Each participant is matched with a mentor and they meet one on one at least once a month. We believe discipleship of heart and mind is crucial to equipping and encouraging career women to be salt and light in their vocations.

You are invited to pray and consider joining us. In order for you to make an informed and careful decision, here is some helpful information for the upcoming year—
September 2010 through May 2011:
• One book per month required reading
• Commitment to meet—
o September 18th for our first meeting
o October 15-17, 2010—mandatory Crosstrainers retreat at Osprey Point
o 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on the 2nd Saturday of every month from November through May
• Meet with a mentor once a month

We believe the group dynamics are well served by keeping the group number to about 12 mentees and several mentors. To request an application, please contact Rebecca via email. We use the applications to match each participant with a mentor. Application deadline is July 30, 2010.

As we trust the Lord to bring together the group of women, we look forward to what the Spirit will do in and through our group this next year.

Many blessings in Christ,
Cynthia Hutchinson

Performing Arts Camp Still Needs a Car!
Summer is here and along with summer comes a few great camps offered by Kingdom Kids! One of these camps is a drama camp for rising 3rd grade to rising 6th grade children. In order to host this great camp we still have one important need for the Kidshine staff for the week of August 15th-22nd. We are still in need of someone to volunteer a car that isn’t used much, so the Kidshine staff will be able to get from their host family’s home to the church each day. If you can help us with this need please email Billy Robinson or call him at (703)394-0575.

Save The Date!
Reformed Theological Seminary Convocation and Reception to be held on Thursday, August 26th at 7:30pm. More details to follow.

Retreat Brochures Available!
The church-wide retreat is coming soon, August 27-29! Pick up a brochure from the Information Center to find out all you need to know, including our new SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER COSTS. Get connected to the amazing folks you’ve only ever passed in the hallways, be refreshed by the change of scenery, be encouraged by some powerful gospel content, and have an absolute blast while doing so. Everyone is encouraged to attend. If you’ve never been before, this is the year to start.

A Call to Lovers of Preschoolers
MPC Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is seeking childcare providers for the fall for our MOPPETS program. This ministry is for children from birth to age five. Volunteers are needed every Thursday OR every other Thursday morning from 9:15-11:45 a.m. This is a great opportunity to share God’s love with little ones and their mothers! Contact Amy Henkle at (703)801-8548 or Christina Davis at (703)430-4456 if you would like more information.

An In-house Ministry with a World-wide Outreach
Adults from around the world come to McLean Presbyterian Church every week on Wednesday mornings (9:30–11:45) and Thursday evenings (7–9) from September to May. They come for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes as well as to learn more about American culture and customs. Volunteers from MPC have the opportunity to share the Gospel while helping in a practical way. You are qualified to serve in this exciting and fun ministry if you speak English and have a heart for internationals that God brings to our door. Teachers are currently needed but if you don’t feel called to teach, you can become involved in the following ways: help with registration; prepare refreshments, decorations or a program for the AM break time; help care for the children of the students (Wed. AM only); plan a one-time large social event; become a tutor or conversational partner; invite a student or an international family to your home or to join you in another activity. Training seminars are available for anyone interested in teaching. On Wednesdays childcare is available for ESL staff as well as students. For further information contact: Mark Leech (PM classes) or Nancy Wilhelm (AM classes).

This year’s MPC men’s retreat will be held on September 24-26. All men are invited! We’ll be staying again at a beach house near Fenwick Island, DE. Our speaker will be Gary Yagel, Executive Director of Forging Bonds of Brotherhood Men’s Ministry. Gary will teach us on “Focus – How to overcome the ‘driven’ lifestyle, stay focused on Christ, lead at home and gain fresh energy for our mission.” Registration is open via the MPC web site – -click here to register online.
Glimpses of Grace Fall Breakfast - September 25th
The Glimpses of Grace women’s breakfast is a wonderful opportunity to catch a glimpse of God at work in our midst and to connect with other women within MPC and surrounding church communities. This fall, Jane Fuller, president of Assist Crisis Pregnancy Center in Annandale, will be sharing her own personal testimony of God’s grace and forgiveness and the journey that brought her to the ministry of Assist. So mark your calendar now for Saturday, September 25, 9-10:30am and join us for this special event. And if you have a knack for helping out, then we especially need you—woman or man! The Board of Women is coordinating volunteer tasks so that all women may enjoy the breakfast and hear the keynote speaker. Please consider volunteering for this joyous event – it’s never too early to let us know. Questions or to lend a helping hand with the event: Contact Marjorie Mitchell or Jessie Lease.

Internships Needed for Next Year’s Fellows!
The Fellows Leadership Team is currently searching for and setting up workplace internships for next year’s Capital Fellows. We currently have incoming Fellows interested in Medicine, Government/Politics, and Finance. If you work in any of these areas and would be willing to advise or help the Fellows Work Placement Team as we search for internships in these fields, please contact either Martin Henning, the Fellows Internship Placement Coordinator (703) 237-4189, or Bill Fullilove, the Fellows Program Director (703) 581-2015. Thanks for your help!

Ushers for Sunday Worship Still Needed!

Caring for the Homeless in Our Area
The Lamb Center is a daytime shelter in Fairfax serving the homeless and the poor. In the name of Christ, staff and volunteers strive to serve every guest, meeting physical needs (food, laundry, showers, mail, transportation and job assistance) and spiritual needs (prayer and Bible study). MPC has agreed to collect needed items during the month of August. New underwear, socks and travel-size toiletries are always needed, but please stop by the Tower Entrance on Sundays in August for a copy of the full list of requested supplies. Your donated items may be left there as well. For more information, contact Nancy Stone or visit www.thelambcenter.org.

… as we continue the summer series in the Gospel of Mark, “Jesus in His Own Words.” We’ll be commissioning the Harvest mission team as they head to Cuba next week, then sticking around after Harvest for a farewell recital from Andrew Bolden, who is leaving in a few weeks to earn a Master of Sacred Music in choral conducting. A reception will follow!

Farewell Recital and Reception
Andrew Bolden will be singing a recital this Sunday night, July 18, at 8:15pm in the sanctuary following the regular Harvest meeting. His program will include a variety of music from sacred classical, to spirituals, to show tunes. Andrew will be leaving our congregation this fall and heading to Atlanta to pursue a graduate degree in music at Emory University. His talents and great musical skill will be missed in the coming years. Come and enjoy a night of fine music, followed by a ‘farewell’ reception.

Summer is just around the corner and along with summer Kingdom Kids offers a few great camps each year! One of these camps is a drama camp for rising 3rd grade to rising 6th grade children. We need a gracious family to offer space in their home for three women for the duration of the week. In addition to that we will need someone to volunteer a car that isn’t used much, so the women will be able to get from their host family’s home to the church each day. …for you to have a significant ministry without traveling anywhere. Join our Associate Pastor, Butch Hardman, and others at Midweek Prayer Meeting each Wednesday evening at 7:30pm downstairs in Room 19 as we pray for needs both local and international. It’s a small but warm and friendly group that has been meeting for years. No experience required. Curriculum and administrative materials are available. This is a paid, part-time position and you can bring your own preschoolers. Requirements: a heart for internationals, a love of children, and a desire to share Christ’s love and the Great News. For more information, email Jennifer Peters or call her at (703)256-4247.
Performing Arts Camp Needs
Summer is just around the corner and along with summer Kingdom Kids offers a few great camps each year! One of these camps is a drama camp for rising 3rd grade to rising 6th grade children. In order to host this great camp we have two important needs for the Kidshine staff for the week of August 15th-22nd. The biggest need is for a host family. We need a gracious family to offer space in their home for three women for the duration of the week. In addition to that we will need someone to volunteer a car that isn’t used much, so the women will be able to get from their host family’s home to the church each day. If you are interested in helping us out with one or both of these significant needs please email Billy Robinson or call him at (703)394-0575.

Retreat Brochures Available!
The church-wide retreat is coming soon, August 27-29! Be sure to review the brochure in your bulletin (extra copies will be at the Information Center and online) to find out all you need to know, including our new SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER COSTS. Get connected to the amazing folks you’ve only ever passed in the hallways, be refreshed by the change of scenery, be encouraged by some powerful gospel content, and have an absolute blast while doing so. Everyone is encouraged to attend. If you’ve never been before, this is the year to start.

Ushers for Sunday Worship Still Needed!
We are still short a few ushers to serve once a month during a Sunday morning worship service. If you are interested in joining an usher team and are a member of MPC, please email John Bouma or call (703) 425-6555 for more information.

Volunteers Needed – - September 25th
Do you have a knack for helping out? If so, we need you—woman or man! The fall Glimpses of Grace breakfast, slated for September 25th, is a wonderful time of fellowship for the women of MPC and surrounding church communities. MPC’s Board of Women is coordinating volunteer tasks so that all women may enjoy the breakfast and hear the keynote speaker. Please consider volunteering for this joyous event – it’s never too early to let us know: email Marjorie Mitchell or Jessie Lease.

****************************************************************************************************

To request an application, please contact Rebecca via e-mail at: cottondc1@yahoo.com. We use the applications to match each participant with a mentor. Application deadline is July 30, 2010.

As we trust the Lord to bring together the group of women, we look forward to what the Spirit will do in and through our group this next year.

Many blessings in Christ,
Cynthia Hutchinson

The Board’s objectives are two-fold: serving women and engaging women in service. Nominees must be MPC members for at least one year. Training begins in the fall, with examination and confirmation by the Session in early 2011; Board members serve for up to two 3-year consecutive terms.
Interested in changing the culture, the politics, the fabric of our world?
We are considering offering a summer Sunday School book discussion class based on To Change the World by James Davison Hunter, UVA Sociology Professor. One reviewer described this new book as follows: “It is groundbreaking, it is comprehensive, and it is visionary. Above all, it is wise, both sociologically and theologically. No Christian entrusted with institutional leadership or cultural power should miss the chance to read it. It will be provoking better Christian conversations about culture for years to come.” This would be a true book discussion group, i.e. a significant amount of reading would be needed each week to realistically participate in the discussion. The purpose of the class would be to consider Hunter’s perspective and not to necessarily promote his view in its entirety. Bill Fullilove, Horace Lamb and Frank Purcell would facilitate the discussion. If interested, email Horace. If we have 12-15 who are interested, we will offer the class.

Kids for the King Needs You
The children’s choir, Kids for the King, will need a new accompanist starting in September. If you are gifted in this way and would consider serving this thriving ministry, please email Pam Burns or call her at (703)385-7665 to discuss details. Rehearsals are held Sunday afternoons 4-5:15pm Sept-April. An adult or skilled teen student would be welcomed.

Looking to connect with other MPC women in a casual, relaxed atmosphere? Then save the date for Friday, June 11 from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Women age 18 and older are invited to a lighthearted evening of fellowship. Come casual; bring a friend; mention it to your home fellowship group ladies. We’ll laugh and play games in the McLean Room, feature an inspiring chick flick in the Fellowship Hall, and encourage artisans to work on their handcraft projects while chatting. Chocolate and beverages provided; please bring a snack or fresh fruit to share. Email or call Jessie Lease at (703) 273-2161 to RSVP or if you have questions or need a ride.

Still reading? Then Marriage Builders might be for you! All our marriages could use a tune up; and this class is designed to do just that. Wherever your marriage is – struggling, perfectly happy or somewhere in-between – come join us as we cover a wide range of foundational and practical issues. Our goal is to learn how to do a better job of loving one another well that we might take our marriages to the next level.

Spaces are limited so you must register online.

June 12th Parenting Workshop: The Lay Counselor Institute (LCI) in Partnership with Hyde School
What is “the biggest job we’ll ever have?” Many would agree the answer is “being a parent.” But what does authentic Christian parenting look like? What are our priorities as parents, and do our words match our actions? Do we value truth over harmony? Principles over rules? Attitude over aptitude? Scripture provides context for parenting far beyond a few well-known verses. It is richly relational throughout and its implications, intimately applied to our own lives, will profoundly affect our parenting style.

Lay counselors trained and equipped by LCI often find that parenting concerns are one of the more common in the counseling setting. Biblical counseling, practically applied to parenting, challenges counselors and parents alike. To complement its ministry in support of lay counselors and the churches they serve, LCI has entered into partnership with Hyde Schools (www.hyde.edu) to sponsor and co-present Hyde’s “Biggest Job” parenting workshop. As a non-sectarian, nationally recognized school founded in 1966 on the premise of family-based character education, Hyde operates boarding schools (grades 9-12) at Bath, ME, and Woodstock, CT, as well as several charter schools around the country. Hyde’s long history of successes working with children and families, combined with LCI’s commitment to biblical counseling in local churches, presents a unique learning opportunity for both parents and counselors.

The workshop will be held on Saturday June 12th, from 9am to 1pm in Community Room B of McLean Bible Church, 8925 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA 22182. Registration is $60 per individual or $100 per couple. Participants will receive Hyde’s book “The Biggest Job We’ll Ever Have” and an LCI outline notebook. Register online at www.lciministry.org, or for more information contact LCI at thebiggestjob@verizon.net.

Our goal is to learn how to do a better job of loving one another well that we might take our marriages to the next level.

BBQ for BELIZE MISSIONS
Do you like BBQ pork? What about BBQ pork smoked for 8hrs and then served with a secret southern sauce? Then this Sunday, May 23rd is gonna be your new favorite day. The very first annual “BBQ for Belize” will be taking place right after the 11am service this Sunday, May 23rd. Come find us in the Grand Foyer (lower level) or Upper Foyer (upper level) and support the Sr. High Breakthrough Belize Missions team by eating some of the best BBQ pork that you’ve ever put in your mouth. Master BBQ Chefs Ed Sinclair and Derrick Harris will be applying their secret dry rub recipe to the pork and then slow cooking it for 8hrs. Couple that with a secret southern sauce and you’re left with a BBQ sensation. $10 will buy you a meal which will include a barbecue sandwich, side of secret sauce, chips, coleslaw, and a drink. All meals will be served “to go” and all proceeds will go towards the cost of sending our 11th and 12th grade students to Belize this coming July 17-25, 2010 for the Belize Missions Trip. This food will be….AWESOME. There’s only enough food for 250 people, so get it while you can. (First come, First served till we run out of food) Of course, any donations are appreciated…whether or not you eat BBQ :)

Blood Drive
Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. Please show your support and schedule your donation today. Thank you for your participation. If you have any questions, please contact Cameron at (703) 591-3021.

The Board was established by the Session in 2005 and functions to encourage women to live out Titus 2:3-5, to serve as a committee to address women’s concerns and to complement the ordained leadership of the church by serving as liaisons to the church leadership committees. The Board’s objectives are two-fold: serving women and engaging women in service. Nominees must be MPC members for at least one year. Training begins in the fall, with examination and confirmation by the Session in early 2011; Board members serve for up to two 3-year consecutive terms. You are encouraged to submit nominations using forms available in the Tower Entrance – the nomination period closes June 6.

The Congregational Dinner is on Thursday, June 10th and your help is needed! As in years past, a pizza dinner will be served, but MPC’s Hospitality Chairs (April Bailey and Betsy Walker) need your help before, during, and after the dinner.
If interested, email Horace Lamb. If we have 12-15 who are interested, we will offer the class.
