During our Sunday morning worship services, we offer a variety of adult education classes to help you continue to deepen your knowledge of and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We invite you to attend any of the following classes.
THE REFORMATION: IDEAS HAVE CONSEQUENCES
(FELLOWSHIP HALL, ROOM 1-2 AND 5-6)
“The true treasure of the Church is the Most Holy Gospel of the glory and the grace of God.” -Martin Luther, Thesis 62, The Ninety-Five Theses, October 1517.
The sixteenth century gave us Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Suleiman the Magnificent, Copernicus, Galileo, and Shakespeare. It also gave us Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the Protestant Reformation. Why was there a Reformation in the sixteenth century? What was the church like just before the Reformation took place? Why did the Reformation have to happen? By looking at these questions, we can begin to gain some understanding of our own situation today. This class will show us how the Reformation gave us some bearings, some landmarks, some ideas about how to address today’s issues, using the resources, the methods, and above all, the inspiration that comes from the past. Christians in the sixteenth century needed to rediscover the Gospel in all its fullness, and so do we. Taught by Hugh Whelchel and Don Frahler.
THE CROSS COURSE: PART 2
(FELLOWSHIP HALL, ROOM 3 / BREAKOUT IN ROOM 7)
“The Cross Course” is an interactive spiritual renewal course designed to incorporate increasingly the dynamics of spiritual renewal into one’s walk with Christ. This course is actually a blending of courses with which you might be familiar: “Sonship” and “Gospel Transformation” by World Harvest Mission and excerpts from Redeemer Presbyterian’s Galatians course and other writings by Tim Keller. The course is entitled “The Cross Course” because it will regularly point to the cross of Jesus Christ as central to our growth in grace and spiritual renewal. The three-part course runs from September through May. For further information please contact course leader, Horace Lamb. The Cross Course this quarter is only open to those who took Part 1 of the course last quarter.
YOUNG MARRIED COUPLES
(FELLOWSHIP HALL, ROOM 4)
This quarter, we will continue our series of units on “Spiritual Life and Formation Coaching.” In January, we will continue the unit on “Sharing Our Life: Principles and Practices for Living and Communicating the Gospel in Everyday Life.” In this interactive unit, led by John Fix and John Steele, we are identifying opportunities and obstacles that we all face in this area, and then applying practical biblical principles and perspectives to both the obstacles and the opportunities. Drawing insights from the book, The Insider by Jim Petersen and Mike Shamy, as well as other books on the topic that various class members are reading and then reporting on to the class, we seek to relate our discussions to real life situations and relationships.
During the quarter, we will begin our next unit on “Sharing Our Hearts with the Father: Honesty, Helplessness, and Childlikeness as the Basis of a Praying Life.” This unit will explore themes from the book, A Praying Life by Paul Miller, to encourage us toward seeing prayer move from being a cause of feelings of guilt, frustration, and failure to becoming a passion.
Our weekly emails will keep everyone updated on the specifics. If you do not receive the weekly emails and would like to, please email Anna Catherine Harris requesting to be added to the list.
These two units are open to all MPC adult attendees.
JOB: LESSONS IN COMFORT
(FELLOWSHIP HALL, ROOM 1-2 AND 5-6)
Utilizing the PCA recommended study book for 2009 entitled Job: Lessons in Comfort, this course will look not to Job or his situation, but to our covenant-keeping God. Join us as together we explore this magnificent portion of His Word. The goal: that we, like Job, will learn things that are “too wonderful for me.” Taught by: Butch Hardman, Steve Brown, Tim Keehan, Scott Hatch, Geoff Sackett and Derrick Harris.
