Kids on Mission

At Kingdom Kids, our children’s ministry at MPC, we have a three-pronged missions focus:

  • That our children learn about and support the work with street children through the work of StreetChild Mission International, a ministry of Mission to the World (MTW).
  • That our children learn about and support ministry to orphaned special needs children in Romania through the work of Romanian Christian Enterprises (RCE).
  • That our children learn about and support the work with at-risk children in Washington DC through the work of Strategies to Elevate People (STEPdc).

StreetChild Mission International

StreetChild Mission International was established by Mission to the World (MTW), the global missions agency of the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA). The mission of StreetChild is to provide for the physical and spiritual needs of the children entrusted in their care. As a Christian ministry, they provide support to some of the world’s 150 million abandoned, abused, and homeless children. Throughout the year, your child will be learning about the street children and the ministry that is being done with them in the following locations: Acapulco, Mexico; Manila, Philippines; and Nairobi, Kenya. The offering collected during our Sunday School and Children’s Church is sent to StreetChild Mission International.

Inbumi and Martha founded the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Kibera, a very large slum outside Nairobi where an estimated one million people live in one square mile. Most of the people in Kibera are women and children, and it is estimated that 1 in 3 people are HIV positive. Pastor Makuku ministers to the people of Kibera through the church providing spiritual, physical, and emotional resources. There is a weekday school at the church that educates and feeds 200 children.

Sponsor a Child

OneChild, the Mission to the World child sponsorship program, currently has children in need of sponsorship. For only $30 per month you can help provide for the physical and spiritual needs of a child in Africa or Asia. MTW provides bi-annual letters from your sponsored child as well as a new photograph and update once a year. For more information, contact MTW StreetChild via email at streetchild@mtw.org or 678.823.0004, ext. 2452.

Prayer requests for StreetChild:

  • Pray for the many needs of those who are now resettling back in Kibera following the political unrest. They have many challenges to face, including emotional and physical healing for families who lost loved ones, property and jobs.
  • Pray that God will use the Kibera church in the lives of parents who are now attending church in large numbers.
  • Pray for the provision of all the funds needed to complete the first phase of the new Shunem shelter (girls home).
  • Pray for the Shunem housemothers, Caroline and Purity, and Kibera school teachers, that God will be very close and dear to them.
  • Pray for God’s provision for the children who are in need of food and medical care.
  • Praise God for the completed classrooms in Kibera that keep children warm.
  • Pray for Billy Robinson, Assistant Director of Children’s & Family ministries as he prepares for a vision-setting mission trip to Kenya February 5-12, 2009.

Romanian Christian Enterprises (RCE)

RCE is a ministry that has its grass roots at McLean Presbyterian Church. RCE’s programs are dedicated to placing orphans in families, preventing suffering and additional abandonment for at-risk families, and providing education and physical therapy for children with special needs. As a mercy ministry, RCE is committed to restoring God’s order for children and families by equipping and assisting the local church in acts of mercy and grace.

RCE has seen how seemingly small efforts can make a huge difference in the lives of Romanian orphans and needy families. With God’s provision, RCE will continue to reach out, offering mercy and hope. Our children at MPC have adopted a classroom at the Sunshine School, a place supported by RCE.

Prayer requests for RCE:

  • Pray for RCE as they care for the children in the orphanage now under their care. We need to pray that God will change the hearts of the workers and that they will see the children as God sees them.
  • RCE thanks you for your continued prayers for Flavia and her mother during this time of great upset in the family since the divorce.
  • Pray for Razan’s mother, that she will feel adequate in her role as a mother.
  • Pray for protection of the children.

A Special Thank You from RCE…

Thank you so much for donating all the nice warm winter clothing for the children at the Darius Houses. The children were so happy with their new clothes and very proud of their new backpacks. Thanks also for facilitating the winter clothing drive at MPC. The response from the congregation was overwhelming. Today, 30 needy kids with special needs, those that the world considers some of the least among us, now have proper winter clothes for the cold months ahead. Our Romanian staff was also greatly encouraged by the generosity of their American brothers and sisters in Christ“.

Strategies to Elevate People (STEPdc)

Since 1992, STEPdc has been committed to putting into action the love that Jesus Christ demonstrated for the needy to the ParkView and Park Morton communities of Washington DC.

STEPdc believes that all children need committed, caring adult relationships to support their growth and development and to help them realize their full potential. STEPdc also stresses affirmation through faith in Jesus Christ and a firm educational foundation. We embrace the children and youth in the ParkView and Park Morton communities by providing mentor relationships in a variety of extra-curricular programs that enable them to broaden their horizons, rise above circumstances, and make positive life decisions. The mission of STEPdc is to break the debilitating spiral of poverty, drugs, and violence in Washington DC, and replace it with hope, self-esteem, and self-sufficiency.

The STEP Foundation sponsors a Bible Club for the students of Park View Elementary School every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30-4:30pm. The Scriptural Foundation for STEP Bible Club is Proverbs 22:6 – “Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it.” (New Living Translation) The purpose of Bible Club is to expose children to the gospel of Jesus Christ at a level that they can understand.  It is our desire that through Bible study, singing, and crafts, the children will be brought to Christ and experience a personal relationship with Him. Our children at MPC collect cookies and juice for use at STEPdc’s Bible Club.

Prayer Requests for STEPdc

  • Please pray for strong, clear communication between STEPdc and teachers/staff at the schools we serve, that we will work together well and put the best interests of the children first.
  • Pray for the PALS mentors as they restructure their meetings to accommodate kids who must attend Saturday Scholars. Pray that more kids will attend and that meaningful relationships will take root. Thank God for the faithfulness of these volunteers.
  • We thank God for the snacks that Emory Fellowship Church collected for Bible Club 2 at Raymond Elementary. Ask God to bless and prosper this new partnership between Emory and STEPdc.
  • Lift up Antwaun, that he will make good decisions and be protected from friends who would steer him in the wrong direction. Pray for strength and perseverance for his grandmother as she raises him and other siblings.
  • Pray for FAST (Families and STEPdc Together), our new parent group. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring the parents from ParkView and Bruce Monroe together in a spirit of unity and harmony, each being willing to sacrifice for the other. Psalm 133:1.
