Mclean Presbyterian Church

ESL

English as a Second Language is a program that MPC offers to non-native English speakers in our area. The goal of this program is to assist international guests in the very practical need of communicating! MPC’s program focuses on conversational English and American culture. We do our best to match each student’s skill level to one of our six levels of classes, which are offered in both day and evening programs.

FAQs (by students)

How well do I have to know English to attend ESL classes?

We teach classes that accommodate a full range of English proficiency from basic literacy to conversational fluency. We give new students a placement test and assign them to a class based on their proficiency in English.

Is there a cost to attend ESL classes?

Instruction is free, but there is a one-time $15 fee for registration. You will also need to buy your books, which typically cost between $15-$25 depending on the class.

Can I attend both morning and evening classes?

Yes! You need to register for morning and evening classes separately, but you only need to pay the registration fee one time.

Do you provide childcare?

Yes, but only at the morning program.

How do I register?

Just come! We are always ready for new students. After registering, you will take a test to find your level of fluency in English, and then you’re ready to start!

How many students come to ESL classes at MPC?

About 200 international students register for our conversational English classes each year. They come from more than 30 home countries and have widely varying social and cultural backgrounds.

How long has MPC had an ESL program?

Since 1995.

How is Christian teaching incorporated into the ESL class?

The primary focus of ESL classes is teaching English. Christian teaching is incorporated over the course of the year as occasions arise surrounding holidays and other cultural events. An elective, which includes Bible study and English practice, is offered on Wednesday mornings for upper level students.

FAQs (by volunteers)

Does the ESL program really need me?

Absolutely! If you are available during the times that classes meet and are willing to make some new friends, there is a place for you in the ESL program. Our volunteers have always considered ESL to be a very rewarding venue for serving.

What are the ways I can serve the ESL program?

Volunteers are needed as Teachers, Teacher’s Assistants, Substitute Teachers, Tutors, Conversation Partners, Hostess Team Members, and Administrative Assistants. The Wednesday morning program also needs Childcare Helpers, music talent, Breaktime Presenters, and a Break-time Coordinator. More information can be found on these service positions under the Serve section of this website (see the following categories – Administration, Arts, Childcare, Hospitality, and Teaching).
