Adult Education
During our Sunday morning worship services, we offer a variety of adult education classes to help you continue to deepen your knowledge of and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We invite you to attend any of the following classes.
Beginning at 9:15am (January 8 – March 25, 2012)
THE ESSENCE OF CHRISTIAN CHARACTER
(Fellowship Hall, Room 1)
In the Introduction to Oswald Chamber’s book My Utmost for His Highest, he sets a life goal of having an “earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed…” He goes on to say, “We will all feel very much ashamed if we do not yield to Jesus the areas of our lives He has asked us to yield to Him. My determined purpose is to be my utmost for His highest—my best of His glory.” To reach that level of determination is a matter of the will, not of debate or reasoning. Our lessons this quarter will look into the Christian character and discover the attributes that help us develop that determined purpose. We intend to build on last quarter’s lessons about our work and discuss those character traits that will help us do our work to God’s glory. During the first three weeks of March, we will take a small diversion to talk about Missions—the theology of, a perspective from Missionary Kids, and a perspective from participants of short term missions—to compliment the Church’s emphasis on Missions. Teachers will be Don Frahler, March Bell, Stephen Rogers and Hugh Whelchel.
THE CROSS COURSE PART 2
(Fellowship Hall, Room 4; breakout in Room 7)
"The Cross Course" is an interactive spiritual renewal course designed to increasingly incorporate the dynamics of spiritual renewal into one's walk with Christ. This course is actually a blending of resources with which you might be familiar: *Gospel Transformation* by World Harvest Mission, *A Praying Life* by Paul Miller and various articles by Tim Keller. The course is entitled "The Cross Course" because it will regularly point to the cross of Jesus Christ as central to our growth in grace and spiritual renewal. The three part course runs from September through May. For further information, please contact course leader, Horace Lamb. Part 1 of the course is a prerequisite for Part 2. Led by Horace and Cyndy Lamb, Jay McMann and Nancy Ruiz.

MADE TO CRAVE - SATISFYING YOUR DEEPEST DESIRE WITH GOD, NOT FOOD
( Room 13 -- For Women Only)
Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. -1 Corinthians 10:23
Are you feeling underweight spiritually and overweight physically? See how Jesus uses scripture to defeat Satan’s temptations. Join us on this great adventure as you become courageous enough to face the food issues that you may never have thought it possible to find victory in. The more saturated you are with God’s truth the more powerfully you’ll be able to resist temptation. This is NOT a how-to, but rather the missing link of learning to match your faith with your healthy eating pursuits so you can make lasting changes that will give you peace. During this 12 week study (January 8 to April 15), we’ll use Lysa TerKeurst’s book Made to Crave, Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God, not Food. Participants need to purchase this book and a participant’s guide ahead of time. If you have questions, please contact Susan Reber at (703)629-8076.
YOUNGER MARRIED COUPLES' CLASS
(Fellowship Hall, Room 3)
Beginning Sunday, January 15, the Younger Married Couples’ class will be using the winter quarter to go through the book, Each for the Other: Marriage as It’s Meant to Be by Bryan and Kathy Chapell. Some of you may have already read it. Whether or not that is true, we can all benefit from processing the principles in the book together. Whether or not you have been in the class before, we would love to have you join us. It will be important for each couple to have a copy of the book. You are welcome to order your own copy or ask John Fix to order you a copy. The cost will be between $5 and $12. We look forward to discussing the book together.
Beginning at 11am (January 8 – March 25, 2012)
OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY TO THE PLAINS OF MOAB: A STUDY OF NUMBERS AND DEUTERONOMY
(Fellowship Hall, Room 1)
What does it mean to be God’s people? What does it mean to be in covenant with Him? How does that help us to appreciate our relationship to Christ today? These are some of the questions that we will explore in the winter and spring quarters as we work our way through the books of Numbers and Deuteronomy. As we trace Israel’s wanderings from Sinai to the Plains of Moab in Numbers—the threshold of the Promised Land—we will see the faithlessness of God’s People and the faithfulness of God Himself despite His people’s sin. In Deuteronomy, we will come to understand the foundation of the covenant idea in Scripture and why it is the most-quoted Old Testament book in the New Testament. Sponsored by Berean Servants.
