Membership

WHAT? We believe that joining a church is more than a formality. It is not simply a matter of adding our names to the church rolls. Rather, it is the process by which God places us in a local church family to love and to be loved. Thus, the church becomes the primary place where we worship the living God as a community, grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord, and exercise our gifts as we serve Him and serve one another.

WHO? According to the New Testament, if we belong to Christ, then we belong to His church. So then, the only requirement for membership in a PCA church is a credible profession of faith.

HOW? With this in mind, McLean Presbyterian Church strives to make the membership process as meaningful as possible. Joining MPC is a two-step process which begins with the three-week Discovering Grace class and is followed by our weekend Membership Seminar.

For more information about the membership process or to register for Discovering Grace or the Membership Seminar, please contact Ryann Craig, Membership Secretary, at ryann@mcleanpres.org or 703.394.0582.

Discovering Grace

Discovering Grace is a three-week study series focusing on the foundational truths of the Christian faith: Scripture, Creation, Sin, and Redemption. This class is a rewarding course of study regardless of your background: whether you are simply investigating the claims of Jesus or firmly convinced of them. It is also the required first step in the membership process.

Membership Seminar

prerequisite: Discovering Grace

This seminar presents an opportunity to explore the distinct beliefs, vision and ministry opportunities of MPC, while getting to know other newcomers. While required for those considering membership, this seminar carries no other obligation than a weekend of your time. This chance to “get acquainted” with John Hutchinson and the rest of our ministry leaders begins with dinner on Friday evening, and continues with a morning class on Saturday, and an evening class on Sunday.

The Membership Seminar includes the following topics:
The Purpose and Value of Christ’s Church (explored after dinner Friday evening)
McLean’s Mission and Ministry Values (described Saturday morning)
McLean’s Convictions and Character (studied Sunday morning)
McLean’s Opportunities to Serve Washington and the World (outlined Sunday evening by the various ministry directors and pastors who serve our community)

The Membership Seminar is designed to provide at least three opportunities, which we believe are essential for considering church membership:

  • the opportunity to engage the Lord and His Word about the priority He places on the local church, and to seek His specific leading in your life regarding a church home;

  • the opportunity to learn about the convictions and unique opportunities which shape the character of our life and ministry together at MPC; and

  • the opportunity to meet the pastoral staff and ministry directors at MPC, as well as to deepen relationships with others in the Seminar who are walking this path with you.
